Pulses, seeds given to Sidr-hit people
As part of its five-month post-cyclone rehabilitation programme, Socio Economic Development Programme (SEDP), an NGO, distributed boat, pulses, fruit bearing and medicinal saplings and vegetable seeds among the Sidr-hit people of the district. Official sources said SEDP with the assistance of European Commission and Action Aid Bangladesh continued their programme from January 8 to June 8 this year in Barguna and Patuakhali.
Sweet water fishes disappearing in Barguna
Different species of sweet water fishes have been declining in the district over the last few years for various reasons, said a survey report. The reasons like gradual drying up of water bodies, non-excavation of ponds, uses of current nets and application of chemical fertilisers on croplands were responsible for polluting the breeding grounds of sweet water fishes. A survey conducted by the fisheries department showed that fish production has declined by 40 percent in the district during the last 10 years.
Two pirates held in Pathorghata
